Historically the traditional outdoor bedding in Australia was the
"Swag", a sausage shaped roll used by "Swagmen",
the equivalent to the Engish tramp and American Hobo. It consisted
of a canvas tent fly rolled with blankets and clothing and is possibly
the descendent of the cavalryman's saddlekit. Although heavier and
bulkier than a bivvy or a dome tent, they are simpler to use and more
durable, comfortable and convenient. Hence their traditional use in
Australia by stockmen and 4WD adventure tour operators, for camel
